Planar Transformers Knowledge:

1. What is a planar transformer

Planar transformer is a new type of high frequency ferrite inductance component that the industry has been trying to use. Due to the square shape of the planar transformer, it is suitable for planar mounting, convenient for design, and enables various types of electronic products to be light, thin and miniaturized. Compared with conventional transformers, in addition to the advantages of structural volume, planar transformers also have the advantages of high current density, high efficiency, low leakage inductance, low heat generation, and good heat dissipation.

Based on these performance advantages, planar transformers have attracted attention and achieved small-scale applications in various fields such as consumer electronics, automotive electronics, medical equipment, and industrial control.

By using of traditional winding transformer design of fast charging sources, transformers almost need to occupy nearly one-third of the internal space, which is not convenient for product miniaturization design. And if the same power fast charging product designed with a planar transformer is used, not only the layout is simpler, but the volume can also be optimized.

2. The application of planar transformer in gallium nitride fast charging

With the extreme requirements of high-power fast charging for energy density ratio, coupled with the application of GaN third-generation semiconductors in fast charging, the switching frequency of power devices has been greatly increased, and frequencies exceeding 100KHz have become a new starting point. The increase in switching frequency also brings new challenges to the selection of transformers.

According to the disassembly of different kind of gallium nitride fast charging report, it can be seen that planar transformers are not only commercially available on a large scale, but also show two types of applications, namely a simple PCB + magnetic core combination and a PCB + magnetic core + synchronous rectifier circuit combination . Both have their own merits in specific use, and also present different application representatives.

3.Two Types of planar transformer

3.1  Let’s take a look at a first type of planar transformer: PCB + magnetic core combined planar transformer first. This type of transformer has the characteristics of strong versatility and convenience for mass production, and can often be seen in high-power fast charging.

3.2 Then Let’s take a look at the second type of planar transformer: PCB+magnetic core+synchronous rectifier circuit. This type of transformer has recently begun to be used in high-power chargers. The difference from the previous planar transformers is that the PCB on the transformer also carries the division of labor of the circuit, which shows that there are many resistance-capacitance and power devices on it.

Advantage of Us:

Not only the product quality is highly controllable, visible and traceable, but also the cost of the product based on the our cooperated production line can be reduced by at least 10% compared to the ordinary planar transformer of the same type. The cost advantage of has greatly reduced the threshold for the application of planar transformers, which will help accelerate the popularization of planar transformers.
